James Bond’s game of choice – baccarat

Posted on Jun 13 2009 | No Comments

James Bond is often seen sipping on a dry martini with a femme fatale on his hand playing cards. His game of choice is baccarat and he’s usually very successful at the table. But compared to poker tournaments for instance, baccarat is a game of pure chance that requires no skill what so ever. It’s a nice looking game that is often played for high stakes. The thing that appeals about baccarat is that the game itself is quite simple and the House edge is quite low.

There is a basic strategy for baccarat. However, since the House automatically makes the correct plays for you, there is no need to concern yourself with what it is. Let’s have a closer look.

Payout Odds in Baccarat

In baccarat, payout odds are fairly simple. Winning player bets pay off at even money. Winning banker bets pay off at .95-to-1, even money minus a five percent commission. Tie bets pay off at 8-to-1. There are no other bets one can make in baccarat.

House Edge in Baccarat

The one bet to stay away from in baccarat is the tie bet. Even though it offers tempting 8-to-1 odds, the true odds of a tie are over 9-to-1, resulting in a 14.36 percent House edge on this bet.

The banker has a slight edge over the player, since the banker’s actions are based on the player’s completed hand. Therefore, player bets carry a House edge of 1.24 percent. With the five percent commission, the banker bet has a House edge, but it is still an appealing one, at 1.06 percent.

Notes on Baccarat Odds

Given the respective House edges, one should always bet on the banker if possible. These edges are based on an eight deck shoe. Fewer decks can adjust the odds.

In general, fewer decks widen the gap between banker and player, so it becomes even more advantageous to take the banker. In addition, fewer decks make the odds of a tie longer, so this bet will have an even worse House edge.

Baccarat is a game that offers one of the more favorable casino edges. Whether you bet on player or banker, you can expect to lose less than a dollar and a quarter on averages out of every $100 you play over the long term. This is probably why high stake players are okay with wagering the huge sums of money at the baccarat table. But not all players are as lucky as Bond.

Rules of Blackjack

Posted on Jun 05 2009 | 3 Comments

blackjack2Blackjack, also known as 21, is one of the most popular table games in gambling facilities.  The most important rule of Blackjack is that at the end of the game, you want to have a number that is closer to 21 than that of the dealer.  This is a game of both luck and skill and is played strictly between you and the dealer.

Knowing the card values is very important in Blackjack.  Cards numbered two through nine are the same in value as the number on the card.  The 10, queen, king and jack cards are all valued as 10.  An ace can be valued at either a one or a ten, depending on your need.  You do not need to specify the value of the ace.  It is simply used at the value that will give you the best hand.  Card suits hold no importance in this game.
Each player at the table is dealt an initial card.  The dealer goes around the table again and deals each player an additional card, dealing himself cards as well.  Once the two cards are dealt, the dealer flips over one of his cards to reveal the value to the players.  Based on this revelation, players decide if they would like to receive another card.  Remember, the object is to come as closer to 21 than the dealer.  If you go over 21, you are considered bust and you lose the hand. It’s also easier to win if there is more players playing with you, as the dealer needs to take more risks and you can also predict what cards are must likely to come. For example, if no J,Q or K  has showed up in the last 10 face up cards, then the chance is much higher that next is just that.

More serious players face slightly different rules and also place bets on the game.  If you are considering playing for money, identify yourself with betting practices and table etiquette.  There are also slightly different variations of the game in different countries, as well as variations on how the cards are dealt and if the card can even be touched by the players or not.

Don’t Underestimate The Importance of Table Image

Posted on May 10 2009 | 2 Comments

poker-table-imagesIt doesn’t matter if you’re playing in a physical casino or at one of the many online casinos, your table image is crucial. In a physical casino, every thing from the way you’re dressed to the way you sit in your chair can portray a certain table image. But, when playing at an online casino, your table image is projected by things such as the way you bet, how quickly you bet and how many hands you play.

There are four main table images, loose passive, tight passive, loose aggressive and tight aggressive. The trick to taking full advantage of table images is to know both yours and your opponents. But, it’s also vital to make sure that you don’t always portray the same image all the time. Playing in the same style game after game tells the other players what to expect next.

Basically, a loose passive player is one that relies heavily on luck to win a hand. They’ll usually always place careless bets and will generally call no matter what type of hand they’re holding. They often don’t concentrate, leave the table early and appear to not care if they win or lose.

Tight passive players are just the opposite of a loose player. These types of players will rarely place a bet unless they’re pretty sure they’re holding a winning hand. During a strong betting round, a tight passive player will often quickly fold their hand.

However, if a tight passive player suddenly throws in a big bet, you’d better pay close attention. When a player has been folding a lot of hands, or making small bets and then stays in the game and places large bets, you can be almost certain they think they’ve got a winning hand.

A loose aggressive player can bring a lot of action to the game, but can also create a lot of chaos. These types of players will raise and keep raising no matter what kind of cards their holding and almost never just call a bet. This type of table style can result in some huge winnings, but it will usually result in many more huge losses.

Many of the most famous poker players have a loose aggressive table image. Often, these “high rollers” will throw their whole stack of chips in the pot and just be holding a small pair. The really good, experienced loose aggressive players will combine a passive style with the aggressiveness which makes it very hard to read their hand.

A player that generally only plays what they think is a winning hand and only bluffs occasionally, is a tight aggressive player. These players are the most successful, they possess a lot of patience, place decisive bets and do very careful hand selections. They are some of the best players in the game.

One of the hardest table images to break free of is tilt. This image usually occurs after someone has just lost a big hand. Desperate to get back into the game, a player in tilt will completely change their strategy and call almost everything. This can result in disaster at the poker table because the players state of panic is very noticeable to all the other players.

Basic Tips For The Game Of Blackjack

Posted on May 10 2009 | 1 Comment

blackjackVery few people realize that Blackjack offers the player much better odds than the house. In fact, out of all the games in any casino, Blackjack has the very lowest house odds. Unaware of this fact, many people bet blind in the game and by doing so, actually raise the odds of the house winning.

There are a few simple rules that you can follow that will keep the odds of the house winning as low as possible. As with any game of chance, you should set a limit on how much you’re willing to gamble before you even pick a table. It’s also a smart idea to decide beforehand just how much you’re willing to bet on each hand that you play.

Remember, if you stick to a set limit, smaller bets will allow you to play longer. If you want to have time to really enjoy the game, choose Blackjack tables that have minimum bets that range between one and five dollars. If you’re playing Blackjack just to win some quick cash, choose tables that have a higher minimum wager such as ten or twenty dollars.

Before playing your first hand of Blackjack, you should make sure that you are familiar with the bonus rules. The bonus rules will vary from one online casino to another. If you play at several online casinos, you’ll need to find out what the specific rules are at each one.

Online casinos have betting requirements for some of the games they offer, which generally includes Blackjack. They also have betting requirements for any bonuses that you accept. If you have the choice of playing with variation rules, you should take advantage of it.

Another great option offered by many online casinos is the surrender rule. This rule basically gives you the option to “surrender”, or fold your hand and only lose half of what you have wagered on the hand. However, the surrender rule only applies under certain circumstances.

A very smart rule to follow when playing any game at an online casino is to not keep chasing losses. Basically, chasing your losses means that after losing a hand you get more aggressive on the next hand trying to regain the loss. Getting to eager, or aggressive generally leads to bad decisions that will result in larger losses.

As the number of online casinos continues to grow at an amazing pace, the competition is becoming fierce. For this reason there is an almost limitless amount of variations to the game of Blackjack. Variation rules will also vary from one casino to another and can severely affect your chances of winning and the house advantage.

Take advantage of variation rules that will increase the percentage of payback and try to avoid those that increase the house edge. Each variation of Blackjack will have it’s own different strategies, rules and odds. So, it’s really important to check the rules for each specific variation.
